New Instructional Designer: Danny Young
We are pleased to welcome Danny Young to the Office of Teaching and Learning! He works at the Lehi campus (office 225). Read more about him and his background below:
Hi, my name is Danny Young. My wife and I have been married for 14 years with 5 kids and we live in Pleasant Grove. I’ve been working as an instructional designer since 2009 where I started at BYU. I also worked with UVUs Global Aviation program from 2010 to 2016. After that I worked on training programs for the FAA. While most of my time is currently spent finishing my PhD in Instructional Psychology and Technology at BYU, my wife hopes that someday I’ll finish my homework and do more work around the house. When I can I like to play volleyball, go on family trips, or just relax with a good book.
I’m excited to work here at MTECH and look forward to meeting more people.
Learning Science Spotlight: Replacing Learning Content with Video Content
Have you ever thought of replacing some learning activities for video demonstrations in your course? You might be interested to know that in a literature review of many studies comparing video learning that replaced other learning activities,
Overall, swapping out video for other types of content had a positive effect on learning, although it is important to note that this was true for 50% of the 105 total studies that they examined, but in 19% of the studies there was actually a reverse effect and no difference in the rest. Perhaps not surprisingly, some of the driving effect here was what the video replaced. When the video replaced static media (e.g. a textbook) there was a much higher positive effect than if the video replaced a teacher lecturing. And the benefit was very large when the video involved some interactivity, such as co-viewing with a peer.Cindy Nebel, Learning Scientists Blog
