Brief Canvas Introduction for Students

Welcome to MTECH — this article will help you get up to speed on using our learning management system, which is called Canvas. In Canvas, you submit assignments, can take quizzes or tests, and can read important curriculum content. We recommend accessing the Canvas Student Guide when you have questions.

Access the Canvas Student Guide

We also recommend using the Canvas Student App on your mobile device (available on iOS and Android). You can use it to receive notifications, take quizzes, respond to online discussions, submit assignments, and more!

Download the Canvas Student App

Logging into Canvas

You will get an email inviting you to the course that looks something like this. Click on the “Get Started” button to access the course and log in.

The web address for MTECH’s Canvas is mtec.instructure.com. We recommend using Google Chrome to access Canvas, as that browser is widely used and compatible with Canvas features. Log in using the email address that received the course invitation.

When you log in to Canvas, you’ll see any courses you’re enrolled in on your Dashboard. Click on the name of the course you want to look at to see more.

There is a to-do sidebar on your dashboard that can show you upcoming assignments:

Setting up Notifications

To set up what e-mail notifications you receive, on the very left side of the screen click on the little user profile image, and then click on “Notifications”

Notifications can be sent to you immediately, bundled together daily, weekly, or never. You choose the frequency of the communication, but it would be wise to make sure you are getting notifications frequently enough since your instructor may send out course announcements, messages, and other things that you don’t want to miss!

Make sure your notifications from Canvas do not go to spam. Notifications(at)instructure(dot)com is the email that sends all notifications from Canvas, so make sure it isn’t blocked on any filters.

Using Modules

Modules are a way for instructors to organize the content of your program in meaningful chunks (either week by week, or unit by unit).

Click on the “Using Modules” link above to learn about using the modules tab to access (1) course content pages, (2) assignments, (3) quizzes, (4) discussions, (5) links to extra content, and (6) file attachments.

Accessing Assignments

You can access course assignments on the course menu. If your program is not Open Entry, Open Exit, the due dates will indicate whether you have overdue assignments, upcoming assignments and undated assignments. Click on the “Accessing Assignments” link above for the instructions on accessing assignments and submitting them.

Accessing Grades

To learn how to access your grades in the course, click on the “Accessing Grades” link. While not all students take programs at MTECH for a grade, high school students can use this to see grades from various grading periods and their cumulative grade. Contact your instructor regarding any questions about grading in your program.
